Jolly Phonics

It aligns itself with the science of reading by incorporating a systematic synthetic phonics approach to teaching children reading, writing, and spelling, always focusing on direct, explicit instruction of phonological awareness and the phonics of reading (decoding) and writing (encoding), which is a foundation for building strong literacy skills. In the book, work on phonics is done by teaching the smallest units of sound from the beginning and practicing merging, subdividing, and linking sounds to the corresponding graphic symbols (letters that represent sounds), which reinforces a solid foundation for decoding and encoding words.

The student is taught to blend any word without guessing or memorizing entire words as each lesson begins with a story to strengthen phonological awareness and encourage vocabulary development. As their knowledge of letters and sounds increases, students are able to combine and segment more and more words automatically, as well as developing and expanding their comprehension skills. Lessons ensure multi-sensory use, as children participate in several activities in the learning process to ensure the best goals are achieved.

Detailed teaching guidance to enable children to identify a sound wherever it occurs in the word.

Sufficient opportunity for children to apply their knowledge of letters and sounds within each lesson as well as through a range of decodable texts.
