Among the most significant and greatest covenants, the Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-Khattab, wrote the "Umari Covenant" for the people of Aelia (Jerusalem) in the fifteenth year of Hijra, when he received the keys to the city from the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Sophronius, after the siege led by the nation’s trustee, Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, and his army. The people of Aelia surrendered and handed over the keys of Jerusalem, submitting to the authority of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. Umar then wrote the "Umari Covenant," granting them safety for their lives, property, and churches, while stipulating that Jews should not reside in Aelia and that they should pay the jizya (tax) like the inhabitants of other cities.
Several prominent companions witnessed this covenant, including the Sword of Allah, Khalid ibn al-Walid, the shrewd leader Amr ibn al-As, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, and Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan. How glorious Islam and its followers are! How honorable Jerusalem is! And how noble are those who uphold and guard it!
The "Umari Covenant" is closely linked to the Night Journey of our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. Upon hearing of the "Umari Covenant," one's mind immediately journeys to Jerusalem, to the glory of Islam under Umar ibn al-Khattab’s leadership, and to a mosque where prayers are rewarded five hundred times over.
